Little blood suckers get a quick death from me!!! hahaha, you guys crack me up!!! had a good giggle reading this !!

Well, Norma, although I hunt them down relentlessly (in order to KILL them without any hesitation or mercy), I still think that even fleas and mosquitos deserve a quick death (to minimize the suffering) ...

HI, everyone, am back, we have taken loads of photos of the shows in Villablino and in Cervera de Pisuerga, I will send them in the next days to Sally so everybody can see them.
The show in Villablino was amazing, there were about 120 mastins!!!
Never seen so many in one place at the same time!
We had a great time, and I love Leon, the people so friendly , the temperature a lot lower than the coast but lovely, ( had to sleep with blankets at night time) The food was amazing, delicious and very cheap to eat out. And I loved it!
We met loads of breeders and went and saw some too. I had the best time. In the next days I will send the photos to Sally, my right arm is really sore at the mo, from a little accident I had so when it gets a bit better I will send the photos, as it hurts to type. AMAZING DOGS!! YOU WILL LOVE THE PHOTOS!!

Hi Tracey,

I have put all the photos you uploaded to the 'user album' in one album called: http://mastingallery.net/cpg145/thumbnails.php?album=701
There are also some photos in the album: http://mastingallery.net/cpg145/thumbnails.php?album=708
these are probably photos you uploaded witout being logged in, and I added them to my album in list of breeders' photos...
If you want those photos moved to your 'user album', I would need your login and password..

Vet called me this morning, another emergancy, for a blood transfusion. We were on our way to the vets with Nube as she was sick and had to go back and pick up Canela. Canela did a blood transfusion to try and save another poor little dogs life. They do an analisis first to see she is in good health then take the blood if she has a fit bill of health. This time I asked about blood types. The first time isn't necessary to be the same type, but if they need more transfusions they then have to look for the same type.
fingers xd the dog pulls through.

Just looked at the updated pics of the puppies still available from Lois in Wisconsin (www.fallcreekfarm.net) and so surprised that there are not
buyers in the U.S. for these wonderful pups. If I didn't already have two of my own, one of those puppies would be coming to my house for sure!!!

great news, we took Milo to Granada to have his displacia test done, and the vet said he has never seen a displacia xray that good in a large breed in the whole time he has been a vet! Now the disc gets sent to Leon, where we will await the results of the grading from them. His hips are fantastic! so we are over the moon!!!!

I am so happy to say that so far 6 of the 11 puppies from Delilah and Moses's litter are in working homes!!! Isn't that wonderful?? Of course, everyone is also allowing their pups in the house too to be part of the family, so the puppies and their owners are getting the best of both worlds, a wonderful companion and a pup with great working potential!

one more thing, our name MASTALAYA has a story to it... we live in a town called Torrenueva which in spanish is new tower. In the town there is an Atalaya which is an arabic lookout tower which was used for guarding against oncoming enemy. As everyone knows mastins are herd guard dogs, guarding and watching the herds against predators like wolves. So the idea was take the MAS from mastin, and TALAYA from ATALAYA, keeping a bit of the arabic culture from Granada and also from the name of the breed and with the air of "guarding" in the significance of the name... quite poetic don't you think ? well we love the name and are glad it came back as it was our first choice. It will take us yrs to become known but we are only going to be very little , nothing like the big breeders, only a few dogs. well there you go!! chow for now!!

Hi Sally, it would have been great to have met you in person, maybe another occasion! yes it would be great to have more shows there, its so beautiful where they had it. Yes we now have an afijo we got it back a couple of weeks ago. But it will be a while before we have pups! I have a question about the files, I seem to have one for kiwiespañol , one for milo etc and now for mastalya, can you tell me how I can put them all togther? when you have the time of course to explain to me. I am not very good with computers!! well un beso!

Hi Tracey,
I wish I could have travelled to Velez Benaudalla this year...
In Barrios de Luna 08 I actualy said to some of the breeders from the South, that I would plan to come, if possible...
Unfortunately I could not go...but if AEPME plans to make a monográfico in the South of Spain next year too - I will try to make it

Another thing...I just saw your latest photos updated to the mastín gallery...have you registered the kennel name MASTALAYA
Well, I already added you to the breeders in the gallery

I hope that the AEPME will repeat the show in Velez Benaudalla in Granada every year, for us mastineros here in the south of Spain, the site is perfect and its also fair to us southerners to have a monographic down our end of the woods, since most are up in the North of Spain. So fingers xd!!! it would be great for us. Also it was wonderful to get to meet some of the best breeders in the country and for them to be so nice with us unknowns! really was a wonderful atmosphere without pretensions. P.s suzkwitz, I took another amazing head shot of Milo, with natalie and the river, you didn't think I could aye? haha xxx
bullet kiwiespañola on Friday 10 April 2009 - 21:52:30
ok, I have taken loads of photos, when I can I will load them for everyone ok, still waiting on my computer! Isabel and her hubby are wonderful and are now part of the fam along with the pups, muga, branko and sarko, adorable!! we are going to go to more shows with them and have become great friends. Jose L,Moncada said the standard and quality of the mastins in the show was of very high standard, and was honered to judge such beautiful examples.

Vets have called- another emergancy and Canela is going to give blood to save the life of another dog, this is now the 4th time she has donated her blood. I am so proud of her, and also proud to help other animals by letting the vet use our Canelas blood. They need dogs that weigh over 40 kilos to do transfusions.

hi Franz, are you referring to the last two posts on the forum ?
I have put them in spanish cause its about two monografic shows here in Spain, I copied and pasted them, one was an email that came to me, and the other was to help a friend that has organized one in Asturias, because they haven't got it on the AEPME page yet. So I thought I would just open a couple of posts to let spanish mastin owners know incase they would like to go and compete or go and watch.
At the mo, I haven't got time to translate, will try and do it later on ok.

The best advice will probably be: learn to live with it !
Some mastines have it; others don't ...
Is she "just moving the air" when she is snoring ?? Nothing can be done ... Does she also makes the floor vibrate ?? Then give her a mattress to lay on ...

I wonder if there is any difference in longetivity between mastines who work with / guard livestock for a living compared to those that are strictly show ring dogs or pets. Has anyone studied this? It seems to me, if a dog is allowed lots of room to safely roam and exercise, it can only assist in his living to a ripe old age. I wonder if having a 'mission' to protection some stock helps a mastine 'hang on' and live longer....? Not that competition in the ring isn't a 'mission' and I am sure there are dogs who live to show and parade before judges and are very happy, healthy dogs who live long lives.... Just pondering this...that's all... !

10 May : 19:02
Do you suppose the foundation stock of today's breed when AEPME was formed, came out of a small gene pool and was there a lot of line-breeding going on? would that be the reason there are so many problems in the breed now?

MastinMel
10 May : 18:32
I think health, temperament and workability should come first and conformation second priority. Breeders ought to goal for the "entire package" if you know what I mean..

sally
30 Apr : 16:43
Frans, as usual I did not express myself very well
I am sure many mastines live more than 6-7 years, but many of the mastines I saw at shows - and many of the mastines who had great results in the shows - suddenly past away at the age 6-7... Quite too many...
I am sure (hope) that breeders take things like overall health and longevity very serious and want to integrate these factors in their breeding-plans...
I think it would be a great idea to publish "lineages" of mastines that reach a GOOD, ACCEPTABLE age instead of lineages of mastines that "produce" champions...

suskewitz
30 Apr : 13:02
Sally, you say that dying at six, seven years of age is starting to become the norm. I really hope that's not correct. I also know that there are (several ? many ?) breeders -as well in Spain as outside Spain- that take things like overall health and longevity very serious and want to integrate these factors in their breeding-plans. Hmm ... maybe we should publish "lineages" of mastines that reach a GOOD, ACCEPTABLE age instead of lineages of mastines that "produce" champions. Shall we start with reviving the forum-topic on "life expectancy for mastines" ... ?

sally
23 Apr : 22:08
Frans, it may be a sad story behind the photo of me and Toro - the hard thing for me and my son was to loose him at such a young age...
6 years of age is not an acceptable life expectancy for a mastín.
Unfortunately, Toro's untimely death is not unique. It's unfortunately not uncommon that Mastines die around age five, six seven years. That is actually quite before it approaches the norm. It's scary, especially because there just does not seem to be any interest in exploring why these Mastines had such a short lifetime.

sally
23 Apr : 21:41
MastinMel, yes I had a nice 'happy' birthday - NO, everthing did not went well, I crossed the line - and entered into the 'flock' of 'old people'
If you ever go to Spain, and with your 'obvious passion' about the Mastín español, you really should visit Spain sometime (might give you quite a new opinion about the breed) ... it would be a very good idea to visit Gregorio, he is on my top list too... - but remember, there are many breeders/shepherds/owners in Spain that are very much 'worth a visit'

suskewitz
20 Apr : 15:13
Sally,
It is a very sad story behind the picture of you and Toro on the frontpage, but the picture as such is great.
Not everyone who lost his (or her) mastín has a "last memento" like this.

Sorry this is late, Sally (haven't been here in a while) - hope you had a happy birthday and all went well! If I ever get to Spain Gregorio of Abelgas will be on top of the list of breeders to meet as I am quite impressed with his mastines!
